Like his cousin the brown bear, whom he resembles in shape, he is a hermit and lives alone in the immense trackless forests which covered the Rocky Mountains, and indeed (at least in olden times) the greater part of North America. During the day he sleeps in the depths of some mountain cavern, and wakes up at dusk to go out in search of prey. All the beasts of the forest live in terror of him even the white bear flies before him.

No prettier site could be imagined for a town of the prairie dog people, among whom there is no more enterprising frontiersman than Pezpeza. Although it was situated in plain view of one of the large summer camps of the wild Sioux, the little people had been left unmolested. The wild men lived then in the midst of the greatest game region of the Dakotas.

He was brought to Georgia in a slave ship when he was about twenty years old, and remained upon one of the sea islands for several years. Finally, he fell into the hands of the family of which Uncle Remus's little partner was the youngest representative, and became the trusted foreman of a plantation, in the southern part of Georgia, known as the Walthall Place.

I had forgotten Cousin Emily and the world was full of primroses and larks and light hearted passers by. Suddenly, at the other side of the street I saw a bursting sunshade of balloons, emerald and ruby, transparent white and thick, solid yellow, a birthday bouquet from a Titan to his lady. Reverently, lovingly, I looked at them, my heart full of joy, but I did not cross the street.

An accumulation of such goods is easily and quickly made. They cost almost nothing and they bring par in the foreign market. Travelers who come to America always freight up with the same old nursery tales that their predecessors selected, and they carry them back and always work them off without any trouble in the home market.

She cast frequent glances over the gorge to the Peak of the Buffalo Trails in evident anticipation of some appearance there. While she waited she let her eyes sweep down the Valley, her heart and ofttimes her feet dancing with the sun. The gleaming valley had nursed her through childhood, making her skin as brown as that of the metis maiden, her blood warm and red and her soul free with the purity of the flashing light.

“Granny certainly is growing foolish in her old age,” thought Reddy, as he trotted along behind her. “I told her that Quacker never once came ashore all the time I watched yesterday. I don't believe he ever comes ashore, and if she knows anything at all she ought to know that she can't catch him out there in the water. Granny used to be smart enough when she was young, I guess, but she certainly is losing her mind now.”

"The question as to the source from which the water is supplied which belongs to a high branch of mathematics, and is therefore beyond our present scope does not apply to the sea. Let us, therefore, take the familiar instance of a man standing at the edge of the sea, at ebb tide, with a solid in his hand, which he partially immerses: he remains steadfast and unmoved, and we all know that he must be drowned."

"I like just what Papa likes to tell," said George, who had set himself down on a footstool at his father's feet.
"Mamma, dear," said little Nelly, the youngest of the party, "do please shut your eyes and go to sleep, that you mayn't be able to say,' Nelly, it's time for you to go to bed' just in the middle."

She knew he would just love the plunge and the surf bathing, and there was going to be a boomers' barbacue up at the Big Trees in two weeks and it would seem like home to him, seeing a cow roasted whole! She did love Montana, and she hoped he brought his chaps and spurs along, for she had told Lola so much about him, and she wanted Lola to see him in his Wild West clothes.
