I am not an admirer of pet parrots. To me, and I have made the discovery that to many others too, it is a depressing experience, on a first visit to nice people, to find that a parrot is a member of the family. As a rule he is the most important member. When I am compelled to stand in the admiring circle, to look on and to listen while he exhibits his weary accomplishments, it is but lip service that I render.

Towards evening, however  which is the best time to watch these birds they stand attending to their plumage, or walk with picked steps in a leisurely fashion, which, with their lean gaunt figure, sad and rusty coloured, and a certain sedateness, almost punctiliousness, of manner, fancifully suggests to one the figure of Don Quixote de la Mancha, with a touch or two, perhaps, thrown in of the old Baron of Bradwardine of Tullyveolan.

The kitchen was a very different sort of place from those in American homes. When Francisco's mother wished to cook rice or boil a chicken, she made a little fire on this platform, drew two or three of the stones near it, and placed the pot or kettle on them and over the flames. My doggie is unquestionably the most charming, and, in every way, delightful doggie that ever was born. He is unique, a perfectly beautiful and singular specimen of of well, I won't say what, because my friends usually laugh at me when I say it, and I don't like to be laughed at. But as you come to know him he grows upon you; your feelings are touched, your affections stirred, and your love is finally evoked.

In his anger, he had met the first advances of the express messengers with growls, and they had retaliated by teasing him. They growled and barked like detestable dogs, mewed, and flapped their arms and crowed. It was all very silly, he knew; but therefore the more outrage to his dignity, and his anger waxed and waxed and the lack of water caused him severe suffering and fanned his wrath to fever pitch.
